Here's a sample conversation I had with a colleague last week:

Bimbo: I can't log into my internet banking account. Why can't I do that?
Me: (this has nothing to do with my job) I'm really not sure. Why don't you call your bank?
Bimbo: (launches into a long winded story about how she used to be able to do internet banking and now she can't, and then launches into another story about a friend of a friend of a friend whose account disappeared while doing online banking )
Me: I really don't know. Why don't you call your bank and find out?
Bimbo: (continues her saga of how she's tried several times to log in without success). Why can't I login in?
Me: Why don't you call the bank?
Bimbo: Do you know their phone number?

How would you approach (notice I didn't use the word confront?) a person whose perfume makes you gag???

Whenever this person leaves an area, you can almost see the fog she leaves behind - even 5 minutes later!!! I stuck a note in the ladies room that read "the Vanilla Musk is a little much" as a hint - she didn't take it. I then spoke to her manager who spoke with her and she stopped wearing it for awhile. Unfortunately the replacement was barely tolerable. She started up wearing it again and I finally spoke to her.

(SIDENOTE: I wasn't working on getting the nerve to speak to her. I just wanted to make sure it came out OK without offense.)

I took the straightline approach. I started out with, "This is a little awkward.....". I said that her perfume was really causing me to have breathing problems. That for a while she wore a different scent that was more pleasant and could she please wear that one to work instead of the vanilla musk. She didn't say much and left my cube rather abruptly.

As far as how well did she take it???? SHE DOUBLED UP ON THE STUFF TODAY!!!!!
